Sushma Koirala Memorial Trust (SKMT) was established in 1993 as a charitable service oriented social organization, which focuses on providing help to the downtrodden, oppressed, destitute and underprivileged people of Nepal so that they can help themselves to face their economic and social hardships. The Trust is named for the Late Mrs. Sushma Koirala whose strong determination to reform contemporary Nepalese society was a guiding light for her daughter Sujata. Late Mrs. Koriala's strong interest in eliminating the social and economic problems of the poor and underprivileged through community development, education and public awareness activities laid a solid foundation on which the social service commitment of the Trust was built.

Ms. Sujata Koirala, the founder/president of the  Trust and only daughter of the Late Mrs. Sushma  Koirala witnessed this service commitment and was  determined to continue her mother's work. As a  consequence she founded SKMT with the co- operation and advice of distinguished persons representing diverse disciplines, backgrounds,  expertise and experiences in social development,  community action, advocacy, human settlement, planning and organizational development.

Since its establishment, SKMT has implemented numerous national, district and local level activities, projects and programs to achieve its social service commitment to the poor and disadvantaged.
   
  • Poverty reduction and empowerment of the downtrodden, needy, and suppressed people particularly women and children.
  • Raise awareness to protect the environment and improve sanitation.
  • Promote health and education services to individuals and families from the marginalized groups, e.g women, children, tribals etc.
    • To encourage and assist women to organize, initiate and enhance group visibility and interventions.
    To provide quality training, produce skill competent individuals and create self-employment opportunities from the Trust's targeted areas.
    To promote preventive and curative health programs to improve the health status of the Nepalese people.
    To provide nationwide specialized surgical service interventions for burnt and post burn patients.
    To promote skill development and literacy programs for the socio economic development of underprivileged women.
    To eliminate from the Eastern Region of Nepal the worst forms of child labor.
    To raise individual and community consciousness to practice hygienic sanitation and protect environment.
    To promote the local resources and adapted technology at the community level.
     
    Project and development program accomplished by Sushma Koirala Memorial Trust (SKMT) to date, it is evident from this the success  in various areas including empowerment of women in rural parts through specialized training and advocacy, saving and credit and various income generating activities. No doubt count the value, professionalism, commitment and competency SKMT has in fulfilling its goal to benefit the poor and needy people of Nepal.
